Tooth abscess
The abscess can appear in two places
The abscess can appear either at the level of the tooth or at the level of the gum.
A dental abscess is an infection located at the apex (end of the tooth).
A periodontal abscess is a localized infection in the gums. Without treatment, it can lead to the destruction of dental supporting structures (teeth or even your jawbone).
Symptoms of a Tooth Abscess
- Sudden, intense, stabbing pain, usually at the root of the tooth
- Red, inflamed gums
- Bad taste in the mouth and bad breath
- Evacuation of pus by caries or by the gum (possibly).
- If the infection is extensive: swelling under the skin, difficulty opening the mouth.
The causes
- A broken tooth,
- A deep untreated cavity,
- A blow to the mouth and front teeth
- A gum disease called periodontitis.
How to treat a dental abscess?
In most cases, your dentist will prescribe an antibiotic. Sometimes drainage of the abscess is needed to control the infection. After taking antibiotics, treatment will be necessary. The abscessed tooth may require root canal treatment followed by a composite restoration or a crown or even the extraction of the tooth. A periodontal abscess may require periodontal treatment.
