Dental sealants
Dental sealants are a preventative measure. They can prevent cavities from forming in the grooves of permanent premolars and molars. This treatment does not require local anesthesia so no injection.
About 80% of childhood cavities occur on teeth that have deep grooves since they are more difficult to clean with the toothbrush.
Dental sealants are strongly recommended for children between the ages of 6 and 14, especially when their molars and premolars have deep grooves. However, adults more vulnerable to the formation of cavities also benefit from having recourse to it.
The furrows are, most of the time, very fine, so much so that the bristles of the toothbrush cannot get rid of all the food residues after the meal. To counter this inconvenience, the dental professional applies sealant, which fills the grooves and flattens the occlusal surface and prevents fine particles from infiltrating inside the tooth.
Avantages des scellants dentaires
- Cover pits and fissures where bacteria and food accumulate and lead to tooth decay.
- Apply to harder-to-reach teeth where plaque is more likely to accumulate.
- Economical: Sealant application is on average half to one third of the cost of making a filling to treat cavities.
