Broken tooth or broken tooth
You have received a blow and are afraid for your teeth?
If the tooth is broken or you suspect this possibility, it is imperative to consult a dentist as soon as possible. Hidden lesions may exist, especially at the level of the root and the dental pulp. To avoid pain and infection, consultation is recommended within 24 hours of the accident.
Several cases are possible:
As soon as you arrive at the clinic, an X-ray of the tooth(s) will be taken to assess the situation. If the dental pulp is not reached, in some cases, the dentist can reattach the piece of tooth preserved by you. If the piece cannot be reused, you will be offered to make a porcelain crown or a composite filling (in white), depending on the situation.
If the root is affected then most of the time the tooth has to be extracted and replaced. You then have three options:
1. An implant, i.e. an artificial titanium root, on top of which a crown will be placed. This treatment is fixed and has a very long lifespan.
2. A bridge, i.e. a rootless crown that rests on the two adjacent teeth. This treatment is fixed and has an average lifespan (8-15 years).
3. A partial denture held in place by metal clasps. This treatment is not fixed and must be repeated every 5 years.
